Sci-Fi Comedy "What's that?" "That's my penis. It Hums." "I guess it doesn't know the words!"

Gary Shandling would have been hard pressed to bring out a better picture for his first leading man role. WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM is a good start and he was lucky to have Academy Award (c) winner Mike Nichols direct this first endeavour. This is a funny sci-fi romance film which also stars Annette Benning and Greg Kinnear. The only casting that I would have liked to see was Rip Torn playing the part that was played by John Goodman. Don't get me wrong, Goodman was good in his part but I think Rip Torn would have added a little hard edge to the character. This film of course borders on being a one joke movie but it is extremely funny. Here's how the story goes. Gary Shandling stars as H1449-6/Harold Anderson, an alien/banker who is sent to Earth to impregnate a female human to somehow ensure his planet's domination of the universe. How this is to come about I never caught. Okay, so it seems that there are no women on this planet, there are only emotionless, numbered men and none have a penis. One man, H1449-6, is chosen to go to earth and learn the ways of men and women and of course get one pregnant. To that affect he is given a penis with only one drawback, it hums when it is excited. His only problem is to try to learn what women are like and get them to have sex with him. He tries his best emotionless lines and nothing works until he meets Annette Benning. John Goodman's character is an avation inspector who is out to prove that there is an alien on earth. Greg Kinnear is a womanizing co-worker of Harold Anderson at the bank they work at. Why Kinnear wants to chase women when Linda Fiorentino is his incredibly sexy wife is beyond everyone's guess. The entire cast is fun to watch and are all excellent. The movie has lots of funny routines that will definitely entertain you as we see Harold grow into much more than what he was. He learns more emotions than he cared for and definitely more than his superiours wished him to learn. If you want a nice fun night out at the movies this will be a good bet. I do not recommend it for children under 13, to much sexual goings on and some brief nudity I would not be surprised if someone turned WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM into a television series. The ending lends itself well to a television series.
