ANIMATION/ADVENTURE Except for needed alterations the story followed the basic principles that Edgar Rice Burroughs had set down. The story starts with Tarzan's parents being marooned in Africa and learning to survive in the jungle. These scenes are played at the same time, in similar manner with the gorillas Kerchak, Kala and their child. Tragedy strikes both families of course so that the story can come together. The lose and deaths are off screen so as not to frighten the children. Kala soon discovers the human child that has lost it's parents and after saving it from the leopard returns to her tribe with her new child. The tribe is befuddled and her mate Kerchak reluctantally accepts the child but refuses to accept the child as his son. These gorillas are beautifully animated realistic Silverbacks that live in the lush Africian jungles. The animator's used a new computer animation technique called Deep Canvas to animate this jungle. The plants look and move so lifelike you would think that they were real. As we return to the story we see it go through excellent and well contructed scenes to show the child grow into a young lad and eventually into a man whom Kala has named TARZAN. Tarzan tries repeatedly to secure Kerchak's acceptance but no matter how hard he tries he fails. We see him have plenty of fun and adventures with Terk and the elephant, Tantor. Most of this is of course done to Phil Collins excellent songs. Eventually of course the inevitable happens, Jane , her father and the nasty Clay enter Tarzan's life and his entire world is turned upside down. Tarzan eventually realizes that he is not an ape but a man; a man who is quickly discovering his love for the beautiful Jane. His turmoil begins and added trouble to the mix is Clay who has only the desire to capture the apes. Enough of the story now. This is a beautiful film which I am sure will be slightly marred by some violent scenes, deaths and a hanging slightly off camera. I think these scenes will disturb the parents more than the children, so be warned. Of course this is why it will not garner a Family rating. It would be a shame to miss this film because of these scenes. You should also be prepared to buy some toys this Christmas because they will surely be out there in force. This great movie will capture your imagination so spend the money to see the excellent story, animation and the excellent ending. |
