| DEEP BLUE SEA ACTION/THRILLER/HORROR Twenty two years have gone by since JAWS and I thought it would be safe to go back into the water...uh uh..nope...no way... Now we have to contend with intelligent Mako sharks. DEEP BLUE SEA attempts to make us realize that tampering with nature is never a good idea. You would think that witht he story of Frankenstein we would realize that trying to beat nature at it's own game is not a good idea. Nope, no way...we still continue to try and improve nature. This time scientists who abandon the rules create sharks with larger brains and intelligence. A team of scientists working in the middle of the ocean in a rather fantastice undersea facility are trying to find the cure for Alzheimers. They experiment with Mako sharks since sharks never lose their memory functions or get cancer. They succeed in finding hte solution but to do so they had to enlarge the brain size of the sharks they used. A really bad tropical storm causes the facility distress and when an accident cause the labs to become crippled the sharks take advantage and begin stalking the humans. There is something reallly terrifying knowing that these sharks begin using their cunning to get inside the facility and feast on their makers. There is lots more to the story but I'm not going to tell you anything that will give things away. You can be certain people will die at the fins of the sharks...well actually their teeth. The sharks were beautifully done in computer graphics so that they look incredibly real. They could never do the effects needed with mechanical sharks. The speed that they move with makes them look horribly real. You are going to see lots of teeth rending lots of flesh, bu,t some shark movie cliches have been avoided nicely. There are no naked girls getting eaten. Now, as to whether you should take the kids to this movie...well it will be intense for them but they may eventually see them on tape or television anyway. Use your parental discretion but you can be sure the kids will want to see this movie. Good script, good acting, good special effects that do not overpower the story so overall this is a movie worth spending your money on. Enjoy it but don't squeeze the person next to you too hard during the scary parts. |
