Dark Comedy

Synopsis: ANALYZE THIS is a fairly original film. I can not say that I have ever seen a film where a Mafia leader goes to a shrink for help. I laughed quite a bit and enjoyed every minute. Go ahead shell out the cash on this one and see why it was the number one film on it's opening week.

It was nice to see Billy Crystal in a good film again. He wasn't wild or goofy, he just did a nice job under director Harold Ramis. But then again how can you not be good when acting next to Robert DeNiro, Chazz Palminteri and a wonderful cast of character actors. This film made me laugh often and unexpectantly hard. Sometime I felt silly because I started to laugh to loudly, but when everyone kept laughing, I felt okay with it.

Robert DeNiro as Paul Vitti, one of New York's most powerful gangster shows the audience that he can do excellent comedy. Come to think of it there is hardly a film that DeNiro has done that I did not like. His interaction with Billy Crystal is excellent. Crystal plays Ben Sobol a divorced and soon to be remarried New York psychiartrist whom is thrown by fate into the hands of Paul Vitti a gangster with severe physcological problems that get inthe way of his decision making, his family and his mistress. He has a problem with the death of his father a former gang leader.

Many funny moments run threw this film as well as serious and dangerous happenings.. One funny scene during the marriage ceremony shows one of the bad guys falling or being thrown through a window right on their wedding dinner. It's a serious moment but it is funny. When asked why, he a happily married man, has a mistress, his answer is because he has certain sexual needs that his wife can not supply. Crystal suggests he ask his wife to supply those needs. Vitti's answer is funny. He says are you nuts my wife kisses my kids with that mouth. Everyone just had to laugh at that one. Wait until you see the consequences to Sobol's suggestions of an Oedipus Complex. The film is a wealth of humourous lines and happenings. I must say it was interesting to see DeNiro do crying scenes in this movie.

br> Crystal finally figures out why DeNiro has these panic attacks. This leads to DeNiro's ultimate decision about his life. Along the way Crystal learns much about himself as well. The only thing about the film that was a little, teeny bit disappointing was the part of Lisa Kudrow as Crystal's fiancee. Unfortunately, even though she did her usual good job, any other actress would have fit her roll. Of course she was probably happy to take the roll just to work with all these seasoned professionals.

Once again I highly recommend this film; it's well worth the money.
