| VINCE'S MOVIE REVIEWS | Synopsis: I really loved this film. A young Shakespeare, in this ficticious film, meets the woman whom inspires him when he is trapped with writer's block. Romantic Comedy This is a delightful, fast-paced and entirely fictional story of Shakespeare's life, that you should not miss. I was enthralled by this film. This was actually the first movie with Gwyneth Paltow that I have enjoyed. This part was absolutely perfect for her. It is a very funny and romantic movie with everyone acting beautifully. You will not be wasting your money on this feature film. Catch it quick. Okay here is a quick rundown. While trying to write a new play Shakespeare suffers a bad case of writer's block. It's 1593, and a kind-hearted theater owner Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush) commissions a play by up-and-comer William Shakespeare played by Joseph Fiennes. Needing money the young Shakespeare has also sold the idea to a rival theater but his bigger problem is that all he has is the unpromising title of Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. The lusty playwright finally finds a reason to write again and it comes in the likes of Viola de Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) who disguised as a boy, auditions for and wins the role of Romeo. Unknown to Will. By the way, a small mention here that at the time it was unheard of to have a woman play on the stage. Only men played the parts of women. So needless to say there are many funny scenes with Ms. Paltrow strapping her ample bosoms down. After a comical chase, Will eventually finds that the object of his affection and his leading "man" are one and the same, but the course of true love does not run smooth. Viola is to marry the noble (if penniless) Lord Wessex played by Colin Firth. This doomed affair finally inspires Will to write his tragic Romeo and Juliet. By using some of Shakespeare's own bag of dramatic tricks, including mistaken identity and gender-bending, screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard celebrate Shakespeare while making him as accessible to contemporary audiences as he was during his life. This film is excellently cast, the costumes and sets are beautiful. Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth and Rupert Everett as rival Christopher Marlowe are fun to watch. Catch it soon.
