RUNAWAY BRIDE
Romantic Comedy
Well it had to happen sooner or later. After the success of
PRETTY WOMAN someone had to write a story that would pair Julia Roberts and Richard Gere once
again. So was born RUNAWAY BRIDE. The pairing has been successful, as the film has already grossed well over
100 million.
Richard Gere plays Ike Graham a newspaper columnist from New York City who when in a rush writes an that he has not confirmed.
The story is about a young woman from rural Hale, Maryland named Maggie, played by Julia Roberts, who has been engaged
many times but runs away when she gets to the alter. Things backfire and Ike is fired but then is sent to do a story on Maggie.
Their lives become entwined as they both come to many realizations. Thanks to Ike she soon discovers just how much of a joke
she has become. When she ready to go to the alter with her newest fiance, coach Bob, she goes to buy a wedding dress. The
clerk tells her that she should not purchase the dress she likes because it is too expensive for the few minutes that she will
wear it. Her family and friends all treat this problem as a game with only Ike who feels compassion for her.
One of the funnier moments is the wedding rehearsal where everyone receives a surprise which I am not going to tell you about.
You can guess though, right, after all this is a love story. Other funny moments are the scenes with Maggie's grandmother who
believes she knows Maggie's problem. Joan Cusak also supplies much humour. She made the movie for me. Ms. Cusak
has become a fantastic character actor in the past few years. She gave a wonderful performance in this summer's much ignored
but excellent film...ARLINGTON ROAD. Director Garry Marshall also did a wonderful job of directing this film but I did not
find the film that great mostly because it was too predicatable, there was no doubt as to what was going to happen all along. If
you want to take your girl on a date, then this is the picture for her. Do not misunderstand, I have heard from lots of guys who really
liked the film and I really had no problems watching it. So go out and enjoy RUNAWAY BRIDE.
