COMEDY
This movie seems to be appreciated by men more than women, at least that was what it
seemed like at the screening I went to. I laughed out loud quite often, it was funny.
OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE is a funny and witty but still a poignant story of young man's
forced coming of age. He comes from a blue collar town and a broken home with the father
trying hard to give them a good life. He is an average man who holds his pain and secrets
well. He hangs out with friends that have no future and seem to be on a road to disaster.
Fate steps in and after to many brewskies him and his buddies run into the back of a police
car. With some help his father gets him off if Timothy Dunphy (Shawn Hatosy) will go to a
prep school. He goes not having any choice to a school where his is out of palce, outclassed,
outnumbered and beginning to fall in love with the most beautiful girl in school, played by
Amy Smart. He has a headmaster who seems to be out to get them all. Timothy has no choice
but to grow up after one of his old buddies meets a drug influenced death. He realizes
he has had enough of the old life and must move on by improving himself and making
himself a better person for the girl he loves.
The story is funny and yet it deals with his coming of age with great care to show all sides of
his character. He studies hard to graduate and make his father proud. When he inevertally
causes trouble for some of his friendshe has the strength of character to find ways to
help those he has harmed. The Farrelly brothers have put together a funny film that you
should see.
