"PRINCE OF EGYPT", The biblical story of when an Egyptian prince learns of his true
identity as a Hebrew and destiny of becoming the chosen
deliverer of his people.
Animated Musical/Drama,
Synopsis:
I took my two nieces to see PRINCE OF EGYPT and as we sat there I watched them go from laughter, to
boredom and to fear. This film while it starts okay for kids it does become a little intense, especially when all
the first born die. It is one thing to read about a vengeful God but to see it on the screen is a little much for children.
It would not hurt to give your children some advance details as to what to expect during this film. Religious stories
are usually sugar coated when we tell them to our children so when they are suddenly assaulted with the more
realistic treatment of the same stories it can confuse them and scare them.
I really believe that this film is not really for children even though it is acceptable. It is a more adult story.
The animation and artwork is as good as anything you will see from a Disney picture. It proves that there is life
in animated films after Disney. People should start taking their children and themselves to other than Disney
animated films and so they can discover that there are animated films out there that can rival the mouse company.
This film deserves to do well and to be remembered as a classic.
The Biblical Book of Exodus provides the basis for this rags-to-riches-to-salvation story of Moses; and so
I will not get into it here. Simply the story begins with the baby Moses being put into the river and ends after he
leads his people across the Red Sea. A note here to some enterprising producer out there...how about a new
TEN COMMANDMENT movie using the special effects of today. It would be an incredible film.
There are no talking animals and frivilous songs in this film. THE PRINCE OF EGYPT is filled with real
human emotions. Uncertainty, fear and remorse are some of the feelings plaguing Moses. The film has gone to
great lengths to not offend anyone, it has omitted some important facts, skimming the surface of the
story and adding colour to lighten the mood. The result leaves one visually fulfilled and emotionally drawn in,
but intellectually it can be unsatisfied. Go see it with he family after you prepare the children.
It will probably be rated PG as it is safe for the entire family.
