THE MUMMY....Good old fashioned fun, pulpy adventure story about a curse
that is 3,000 years in the making. .
Adventure/Horror
Synopsis:
THE MUMMY is a timeless story of love gone wrong. Well, at least the 1930's Boris Karloff and the 1950's
Lon Chaney Jr. versions were. This is Universal's remake of their 1932 film starring Boris Karloff. This story has
always been about the timeless love of two people that spanned the centuries. Unfortunately, this version tries to stay true
to this idea but it did not work because not enough time was spent on how much these two were in love and even afterwards
the love angle was in the background in favour of horrific monster effects.
The story begins in 1200 BC in Eygpt where we are told by the narrator, of a love affair between the Pharoah's
mistress Anuck-Su-Namun and Imhotep, the holiest of high priests. When they are caught in the act by the Pharoah
they viciously stab him to death. Anuck-Su-Namun forces Imhotep to run and then before the Pharoah's guards
can take her she kills herself. Anuck-Su-Namun is then mummified. Imhotep rescues the body and attempts to bring
her back to life only to be stopped. He is then given a fate worse than death, being mummified alive and then
entombed alive with flesh eating scarab bugs. All traces of his existence is removed and so begins the story.
It is a fun story with lots of excitement, thrills and excellent special effects. It is a no-thinking movie; just a
plain fun action/horror film about old Eygptian curses that makes you feel like a kid again. Rick O'Connell
played by Brendan Fraser tries to be like an Indianna Jones character but he is not in the same class.
Still you will get your money's worth when you see this movie. It is a thrill to watch Rick and his pal Jonathan in action
accompanied by the adventurous girl, Evelyn Carnarvon. They face countless perils from the plagues brought about
by the accidently ressurected Imhotep.
There is lots of good stuff in this film but there are no slow foot dragging mummies which could never catch
you unless you tripped. Go see this film and you will understand why it grossed $44 million on the opening
weekend. Buy a drink and a bag of popcorn, sit back and pretend you're a kid again sitting in that humongous
palace with that huge screen that thrilled you like nothing ever did in the outside world. Enjoy.
