| VINCE'S MOVIE REVIEWS | MATRIX Sci-Fi Action Synopsis: What is The MATRIX? Unfortunately, no one can be told what the MATRIX is... You have to see it for yourself. If you have been waiting to see this film, get out there and see it quick. I would have to say that this film is the most original concept I have seen in a very, very, long time. It is an amazing film. As I sat there watching it I thought, okay, this film may replace my favourite movie, BLADERUNNER. I was amazed at the ideas, the sets, the photography, the CGI graphics and the fight sequences. The martial arts sequences were incredible; some of best and most different fighting seen in years. Arcade games have been brought to life on the silver screen in the past, but never like this. Andy and Larry Wachowski have designed an incredible film. I remember seeing another film of their's that I thought was rather original and that was BOUND. I really loathe giving away much of this film because it is best seen with little pre-conceptions. I will say first that even though I was knocked over by this film, it did not replace BLADERUNNER as my favourite film. Why? Well, it lacked one important element that BLADERUNNER had plenty of, and that being, personality or heart. MATRIX did not make you feel for the characters. You sympathized with them but it was not that warm feeling I got from BLADERUNNER. In that film you felt for the characters, the good guys and the bad guys. You felt their pain, their desperation for life. In MATRIX the situation was much more dire, but, you did not necessarily feel anything special for the characters. They were too cold, analytical. Mind you, considering the fact the movie is about ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, then I guess that those two feelings apply to this film. In no way should what just said, deter you from going and enjoying this film. This is a fairly long film at about 135 minutes but it really was too short. Another hour would have been easily handled. There so much to see and understand, so much that we would like to see that is left for us to ponder in our imagination. The film has some of the most beautiful and incredible action sequences that must have strained the talents of many artists and the actors. You should expect some long non action sequences where explanations are given. These scenes are extremely important and move quickly. Most of the actors had to learn a great deal of martial arts for this film even though at the end, on the credits, you will see a very large cast of martial artists who obviously had to do some of the sequences. You may have read or heard about how Keannu Reeves who plays NEO, the central character, sat in his tub for two hours and shaved every hair in his body. This you will see was necessary when certain scenes come on. No he is not hairless throughout the entire movie. A teenie little bit about the movie. The basic concept is...do we live in a reality or is that reality just someone's dream or is it a game. Are we even real? Who is real? It is also a grim warning that if we ever become totally dependent on machines, we may regret it. This idea of course is not original as it goes all the way back to the 1920's film and book METROPOLIS. Even H.G Well's warned us of those dangers. Today those dangers are ever more prevelant in our society. The film will awaken you to those dangers in an entertaining and awe-inspiring way. This is a film to be seen on the large screen, in a theatre or drive-in theatre but not on video for the first time. It has the potiental of becoming a cult film someday. DO NOT MISS IT. Wow, I managed to write this and not tell you anything really about what happens, that means the question still stands... WHAT IS THE MATRIX?
