Animated Science Fiction You are all in for the treat of the summer. IRON GIANT leaves Star Wars:The Phantom Menace, in the dust. All the adults raved at how intelligent the script was for this animated fable of morality. The children just plain applauded and cheered throughout this film. I will simple say that if you do not go see this with the family you are passing up the opportunity for your children to really learn something while being entertained. No this is not an educational film. Everything about this film is excellent...the animation, the art, the story, the characters and the lessons in morality. This film is about not being what others want you to be but instead it is about being what is in your heart, what you know you should be. This is a rare film indeed. The story takes place in Maine, 1958, the communist threat is at a peak and comic heroes still flourish. Suddenly from out in space, comes a visitor, from where, we never do learn. This child like Iron Giant is found by a young boy named Hogarth Hughes. This child bcomes the giant's best friend and guardian but will eventually teach both a frightned town and a confused metal giant the meaning tolerance. Hogarth and a young artist, Dean McCoppen help the giant learn humanity and what it means to sacrifice for loved ones; while the town people learn not to fear and prejudice themselves against what is both different and unknown. This Iron Giant has a hidden and deadly secret of which he is unaware but will in time become a threat to those he has come to care about. He will see death through innocent eyes; he will have to defend himself against an army that tries to destroy what it does not understand, and because it could belong to the other side(Communists). You will see the terrible secret of the Iron Giant, and it is quite impressive. What will also be impressive is his recognition of the value of a human life. I am trying very hard here not to give things away; so if you ever loved those movies of the 1950's and you want to see what can be done with them today...then run to see THE IRON GIANT. I will be seeing it a few more times when it is released. It has my highest rating. |
