Drama
A retired ultra conservative security guard goes under the care of a drag queen after he suffers a stroke.
Once again Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions turns out another slice of life film. De Niro is so great to watch on the screen as he is one of the most talented actors around. FLAWLESS is an excellent film even though it will never be a classic but the subject matter is handled in a refreshing way and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. A suggestion...if youre not in a hurrystay and watch the credits.
Robert De Niro plays Walt Koontz, is a well respected man who was a hero cop. Now he is a security guard who loves to go out and tango. He goes to a fancy dance hall that is of course also a brothel. Here he has a partner who he dances with and also beds. His neighbours include homosexuals and drag queens whom he dislikes immensely as he is homophobic. While trying to help save a women in his building, he suffers a stroke and becomes partially paralyzed. His vocal cords end up being paralyzed as well.
Meanwhile his gay neighbours prepare for "FLAWLESS" a drag beauty contest. As all this goes on a drug lord is searching for major monies stolen from him. This search brings all characters together. Ashamed to leave his apartment house, Koontz takes singing lessons from his drag queen neigbour beautifully played by Phillip S. Hoffman. This neighbor is not only openly flamboyant but is also awaiting his gender change operation. Both are prejudiced but as time goes on they learn about each other and tolerance grows between them. At one point both are willing to protect the other up to the point of sacrificing their lives.
They film tough it has quite a few faults does show that when people stop to communicate they can find much in common even when the differences seem to be unsurmountable. The film is well acted and moves along quickly. He it even has the hooker with a heart, but I didn't even discuss her and I won't because that way you can look forward to it.
