Romantic Comedy/Drama
"Pull yourself up by your shakras"

THE NEXT BEST THING is an excellent film which stars Rupert Everett and Madonna. I have to admit that Madonna playing Abbie really inpressed me. This is the best part she has played since her first real movie in Desperately Seeking Susan. She is excellent in this part as a single mother who has a child with a gay man, Robert, played by Everrett. The child is a product of one nights drunken play between these two best friends. She is a straight woman who can not seem to hold on to a relationship and he is out and out gay. Even with these differences they are best friends with much more in common. They are both witty, intelligent, joyful and they have an unconventional approach to life. She teaches Yoga and he is a gardener and they make the perfect couple so when Abbie finds out that she is having Robert's baby they make arrangements to live together and raise the child together to many comic situations. So even though this is the not the perfect family situation it is...THE NEXT BEST THING.

The film quickly jumps from the babies birth to years later when their son is around five years old. The majority of the movie takes place during this period in Sam's life. Sam is played by newcomer Malcolm Stumpf. Into this happy life comes Ben, played by Benjamin Bratt. He played police detective Reynaldo "Rey" Curtis on the drama series Law & Order. Abbie and Sam's life is put into turmoil as what was a fun relationship turns very, very serious. The film does turn from a comedy into more of a drama.

Much happens and revelations are brought to the forefront that will change their lives. Whether it is for better or worse that is up to you to find out. This is a film well worth the money for people who can do without guns and explosions. It is a film with heart that will capture your heart. Hey that sounds like one of those lines that they can use on those TV promos. That's it... now go away.
