Sleepy Hollow
Romantic Supernatural Thriller
Hang on to your head, Tim Burton is back!!!

Tim Burton is one of those rare directors that makes movies that can only be identified with him. Dare I say that he is in the class of Orsen Welles and others like him? When you see a film my Burton, it is obvious that he has directed it. Everything, from the story to the graphics are Tim burton. That can not be said of many directors. SLEEPY HOLLOW is one of these films. It has an exccellent script, excellent storytelling and weird set designs and special effects that make this strictly a Tim Burton film. So if you can stand to watch lots of heads being lopped off this film will give you an entertaining evening. I thoroughly enjoyed the film but in the theatre that I saw it in, one of the side speakers was so badly out of balance that it blared and distracted from the dialogue. Other than that the film was excellent. Out of the many things that stood out, that most visually interesting was when the Headless Horseman comes out of the tree from Hell. Wait until you see those scenes, they are amazing.

The story starts with heads rolling. Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane is a police inspector in New York who annoys his superiors so much that they ship him off to Sleepy Hollow to solve the killings that are occurring in that village. As you can see this is not going to be exactly as Washington Irving wrote it. This story is going to be more like the interpretion most people have in their mind about this story. Once he arrives he is witness to a strange quiet but eerie village. He is quickly informed that the victims were beheaded and their heads mysteriously disappear. The action moves quickly as more and more people both rich and common folks fall victim to the quick slashing swords of the Headless Horseman who is played by Ray Parks but of course you never see him. The origin of the Headless Horseman shows us the Hessian Horseman who is played magnificently by Christopher Walken. We see him as a savage mercenary who delights in killing and beheading. By the way Walken is not credited until the end as he actually never speaks a word on screen except for grunts and sounds of savagery.

Ichabod meets and falls for Katrina Van Tassel played by Christina Ricci a novice witch. Ichabod uses scientific methods of the time to try and solve the mystery. Will he solve before he becomes a victim. The plot unfolds with many twists and turns as we discover the secrets of the Headless Horseman and his vengeance. Everything leads to a mysterious warped Burtonesque tree that bleeds.

The story was a bit wordy in parts but it did not detract from the story; the rest was some and filled with action. The acting was excellent by all the name actors involved. The picture that keeps coming to mind while watching was Edward Scissorhands, one of Burtons best films. Well have fun trying to solve the mystery before it is spelled out for you. There are a few good hints so look for them. By the way one of the funniest scenes in the movie that will make you break up is Ichabod and a spider.
