THE WIZARD OF OZ
Fantasy

SYNOPSIS: "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour! A Technical Triumph! The Mighty Miracle Show That Is the Talk of America!" So proclaimed the 1939 movie posters for the original theatrical release of MGM's "The Wizard of Oz," the silver screen adaptation of L. Frank Baum's children's classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
This film is a timeless classic that should be seen by the entire family. When it was released it was a technical marvel of the film industry. It used a sepia tone to open in the real world, Kansas scenes but dramatically switching to full technicolor once Dorothy (Judy Garland) arrives in The Land of OZ. The beautiful colours and unreal quality makes you feel like you are there in OZ with Dororthy and her new found friends
Most everyone knows the story but I will give you a brief tour. Dissatisfied with her farm life a young girl, Dorothy, runs away with her dog, Toto to save from a wicked old spinster. She leaves her friends, aunt and uncle behind and soon finds a mysterious professor., Their meeting is cut short by a twister that takes up Dorothy and deposits her in the Land Of OZ. The house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East in Munchkinland. Here Dorothy meets The Good Witch Of The North, the Munchkins and the Wicked Witch Of The West who is really unhappy that Dorothy killed her sister. After receiving her Red Slippers from the good witch she begins her journey to the Emerald City to find the WIZARD OF OZ in hopes that he will be able to return her home to Kansas. On the way she meets the Scarecrow, The Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion.
Many adventures await them as they make their way to OZ. Once there they are sent on a quest wich will pit them against the Wicked Witch Of The West and her monkeymen. Eventually she disconvers that home is where the heart is and that she has the ability to return whenever she wants. This beautiful film has woven itself into the very fabric of our everyday lives. This film probably is the most treasured and cherished film ever presented to the moviegoing public. like most I saw it for the first time on television when I was a child, but, unfortunately I saw it only in black and white and it wasn't until many years later that I saw it in colour on the screen of a repitory cinema. It was wonderful. Any parent would do well to take their child to see this classic it would be a shame for a child never to see THE WIZARD OF OZ. Our thanks go out to Warner Bros (who took posession of this film from MGM) for reprocessing it and releasing it to the theatres. Take advantage of it.
