Arnold Schwarzenegger is Jericho Cane an ex-cop who now works as a fancy bodyguard. He is only going through the motions of living since his wife and young daughter are killed by hoodlums, as payback for him testifying against them. He is a good man who now has a vengeful heart and a major drinking problem. Jericho gets drawn into a case that tests the faith that he has lost. His faith is only in his hi-tech weaponery. They are not enough to stand against the threat of Satan as he tries to protect a young girl, Christine York played by Robin Tunney. Christine was born 20 years earlier, in 1979 when certain stars align at the moment of her birth. Due to that she is to become the human vessel of Satan's child on earth. Unfortunately if this happens at the turn of the millenium the END OF DAYS will happen. The end of mankind as well as the end of God's rule and the beginning of Satan's dark rule will occur if this coupling is let to happen. Unfortunately for her while the devil worshippers are trying to protect her a rebellious group of Vatican priests are trying to kill her to prevent the union. Poor Arnold has his work cut out for him. Jericho tries his best but between priests trying to stop him as well as devil worshippers trying to kill him and finally Satan himself trying to seduce him he seems to be fighting a losing battle. Eventually he is crucified by Satan but a good priest played by the wonderful Rod Steiger saves him. The final battles become pure hollywood action fodder. I enjoyed it because I accepted the film for what it is, but that is where the film for many may seem to degrade into a rollercoaster ride of shoot'em ups and explosion filled Hollywood movie scenes. One thing to director Peter Hyams' credit, when he shows us the special effects Devil he keeps it to a real minimum and goes back to using human hosts. The final battle I am happy to say was not a cop out. It ended as this film should have ended. The ending was satisfying as it fits with the the theme of faith and redemption. Here the film sheds its Hollywood trappings and action movie rules. The ending will redeem this movie. No this film is not a classic, it is just a well done film that is supposed to scare us about the upcoming Millenium. Hey Hollywood guys....you better hope these things don't come to pass because you are going to lose your audience. I wonder does anybody in Hollywood see anything good about the coming Millenial event? Though he was decent in this movie let us hope that Arnold gets some better parts in the year 2000. Peter Hyams makes Schwarzenegger look good, but really another TRUE LIES would be nice to have in his future. You know at least in this movie he divests himself of that horrible image I have of him as Mr. Freeze from 1997's BATMAN & ROBIN. Near the end in the Times Square scenes check out the billboards. One of them made me laugh..."LEAGUE SUES FANS". Hmm should we sue Hollywood?? |
